Say what you like about Derek Thompson but Yarmouth just isn't the same without him

There’s been something missing around Newmarket recently.

For many years the town was the adopted homeland of Middlesbrough-born Derek Thompson, but the legendary broadcaster has moved closer to his roots, living next door to former champion jump jockey Brian Hughes in North Yorkshire.

Say what you want about Tommo – and many do – but he was well liked by local businesses, as he so often put in a good word for them on the racecourse.
