Grand National target for Kandoo Kid looks feasible on back of Coral Gold Cup win
Our experts pick out horses to follow after striking performances over the weekend
Newbury hosted the Coral Gold Cup on Saturday and for all it was a weaker race on paper than in past years, it was still a competitive running, albeit not vintage.
The average winning Racing Post Rating for the race over the previous nine years was 161, a mark that only one of this year’s field had achieved, the 12 year-old Sam Brown. Of the rest, Remastered was the only one to have achieved an RPR within 5lb of 161.
Kandoo Kid won under a good Harry Cobden ride, achieving a career-best RPR of 155. Broadway Boy (156) wasn’t far behind in second, also recording a career-high RPR. Victtorino (149) fared best of the rest. He finished strongly having been in rear, making minor errors throughout the race, and should be able to win off his mark.
