End of an era as 'Derby Dave' - the oldest work-rider in town - finally quits the saddle at 73
Dave Goodwin : led up Derby winners in 1985 and 1993
The oldest work-rider in Newmarket has finally hung up his saddle at the age of 73 after a career that spanned six decades and included two Derby winners.
Dave Goodwin – sometimes known as 'Derby Dave' – had not long taken the title of senior operator in the town from John Lowe, who quit the saddle himself and emigrated to Australia only in August.
Scotsman Goodwin enjoyed a final spin up the Al Bahathri late last month in his role for John Berry, for whom he rode out one lot in recent times.
