Derek O'Connor: champion point-to-pointer extends his winning sequence to 15 - and he could be set for a fruitful spring
Derek O'Connor is a record-breaking Irish point-to-point rider, an 11-time champion with more than 1,300 point wins
Before I get to the first point-to-point action of 2025 I want to mention the achievement of Wexford handler Ellen Doyle, who recorded a treble at the final meeting of 2024 at Dromahane on December 30.
This was one of the most notable training performances of the first half of the season. Ellen sent three horses to the meeting, winning all three four-year-old maidens on the card. Two of the Brian Dunleavy-ridden winners scored by a big margin.
The Baltimore Stables team kicked off with newcomer Afancy Getaway who jumped well and made most of the running in the mares' maiden. She's out of a Brian Boru mare, Nora's Fancy, who won five races for Jimmy Mangan, including a Listed mares' novice hurdle at Limerick and a Grade 2 mares' novice chase at Thurles.
