It was another week of bad headlines for the gambling industry which received a stark warning from the Gambling Commission after it dealt a record penalty to online firm 888 for "serious failings" in their social responsibility measures.

Protecting consumers from harm was "not optional" according to the industry regulator's chief executive Sarah Harrison.

The £7.8 million penalty paid by 888 dwarfed previous punishments received by gambling operators.
