'White people already lead racing - I did it for those without the same chances'

The Magnolia Cup winner discusses her inspiring journey with Jonathan Harding

Away from the TV cameras and bustling crowd at Goodwood, while those around her nervously prepared to ride in the Markel Magnolia Cup, Ashleigh Wicheard found a moment of calm before the chaos.

Her mind was on something else, something far bigger. As she put on her distinctive silks, she knew what she had long planned to do might prove unpopular but was driven by an overriding sense of purpose.

The annual charity race will not appear in any recognised form books but it will be remembered for what happened next. After consulting with her competitors, Wicheard led them in taking the knee and raised a clenched fist, surrounded by a sea of mostly white faces.
