At a time when we have been marking the 75th anniversary of VE Day and recalling some of the stirring speeches given by Winston Churchill, a man in France has been coming out with some rousing words of his own.

His cause was immeasurably less important than the one that defined Churchill, but there has certainly been something of the great wartime leader's passion and urgency in the short but sweet addresses made by Baron Edouard de Rothschild.

For the president of France Galop, the medium was not the wireless but Twitter, on which he delivered his most important update early in the hours of Saturday morning, when revealing the late challenge to Monday's resumption of French racing following the coronavirus shutdown had been defeated.
