Lee Mottershead discovers what life is like for a racecourse commentator

There are 99 horses about to race at Bath, the first 13 of them due out in less than an hour. As things stand, commentator John Hunt would be able to recognise hardly any of them. He is not fretting.

Given his famously relaxed, affable demeanour, it should come as no surprise Hunt is unruffled, yet to most normal folk the situation in which he has willingly placed himself would appear to be a tad worrying.

The visitbath.co.uk Nursery is hardly the biggest event in the calendar of a man who gives his voice to the Grand National, Cheltenham Festival and Olympic finals in the swimming pool, but at some point he will need to work out which horse is which. That time has not yet arrived. Indeed, such is his apparent calmness on the balcony of the racecourse hospitality box temporarily being used as the track's commentary position, one wonders if he might decide to visit Bath himself before the opener.
