A number of recent high-profile Flat winners, notably US Navy Flag, whose July Cup success was his third on a Newmarket course, have underlined the importance of course form and we are in a period of the British Flat season where track specialists usually take centre stage.

Why a horse shows a preference for a course is often linked to factors such as their running style and suitability to conditions – namely distance, going and track type – and the challenge for punters is to identify when a course is an ideal fit for a horse.
