'Had the first horse we looked at passed the vet, Goshen wouldn't be mine'
Steve Packham, 55, has been fixated with horses since his schooldays. From Brighton, Packham has had horses with various trainers in the south-east of England but is best associated with Gary Moore and his stable star Goshen, who has taken his owner to some of the biggest days in the jumps calendar in recent seasons.
My interest in horses and racing started as a kid. We lived half a mile or less from Brighton racecourse and my school looked over to where Gary Moore and his dad's gallops were, so I used to sit looking out of the classroom window, watching the horses work in the morning. I've always been surrounded by racehorses and always enjoyed them.
My first taste of ownership came through a friend of ours, who had a horse with Rufus Voorspuy, who trained about 20 minutes away from where we were based. I thought I'd get involved too and that first horse was called Lady Relko. She never won but it all grew from there.
