So much of British racing is wonderfully idiosyncratic. There are the tight turns of Chester, the rolling downs of Goodwood and Fontwell's figure of eight configuration.

Even the all-weather scene plays its part with Southwell's unique Fibresand surface. However, from next year, the latter will be no more, with Tapeta being laid in its stead.

Is this a bad thing? A cogent case can be made for and against the change. Identifying Southwell specialists can be a quick way to profits, especially if you get on at the ground floor before their liking for the surface becomes more widely known.
