An error by racing's administrators Weatherbys resulted in the incorrect details of the Investec Derby draw being published on Thursday morning.

The information was generated at 10.30am following the declaration stage for Flat racing's most prestigious race, prior to the actual draw taking place at a ceremony at Epsom racecourse at 11am.

A number of websites using the official feed displayed the initial draw details before the mistake was rectified.

A spokesman for Weatherbys said: "The draw is an automated process which is generated in parallel with final declarations being processed.

"This automated draw should have been suppressed for the Derby as a random ballot for this race was taking place on course under the supervision of a BHA official."

With history showing low numbers to be at a disadvantage, the outcome of the Derby draw has betting ramifications.

No horse has won Britain's richest race from stall two – where Telecaster will break from this year – and only three winners have come from stall one since the introduction of starting stalls in 1967.

Interestingly among the higher numbers, ten winners have been drawn in stall ten, while stall 11 has also drawn a blank.

Where the winners and placed horses were drawn

2018 10, 6, 5 (12 ran)
2017 14, 13 7 (18 ran)
2016 9, 15, 8 (16 ran)
2015 8, 10, 7 (12 ran)
2014 12, 2, 11 (16 ran)
2013 10, 5, 11 (12 ran)
2012 5, 3 , 7 (9 ran)
2011 7, 12, 13 (13 ran)
2010 8, 6, 11 (12 ran)
2009 4, 10, 2 (12 ran)

However, Ladbrokes' head of PR Nicola McGeady said: "The draw didn't cause much drama in the office or affect the betting. As it was rectified so quickly, we didn't have the chance to make any significant changes to the betting."

The draw took place at Epsom for only the second year, with Derby-winning jockeys Michael Hills and Willie Carson selecting the horse and corresponding stall numbers in a ceremony streamed live on Epsom's Facebook page.
