Ed de Giles: Zlatan's trainer in discusion with owners

Trainer Ed de Giles says a decision will be made on Tuesday about whether an appeal will be lodged against the Goodwood stewards’ decision to strip his runner Zlatan of victory at the track on Sunday.

The eight-year-old, who was bidding for a second victory of the season, finished in front of Luna Magic in the 1m1f amateur jockeys’ handicap but drifted slightly left on the run-in and the result was overturned and Zlatan placed second.

Zlatan's jockey Sophie Smith and Brodie Hampson, rider of the Archie Watson-trained Luna Magic, argued their cases in a lengthy stewards' inquiry, after which it was determined the interference had carried Luna Magic significantly off her intended line and the distance lost was more than the short head by which she was beaten.

Smith was given a two-day careless riding suspension but said after the race that she did not agree with the decision and that an appeal "might be a way forward".

BHA rules state connections have seven days to lodge an appeal against a racecourse decision, at a cost of £500, which is returned if the appeal is successful, but only 48 hours if the appeal involves a jockey ban.

De Giles is considering the options with owners, Casdagli and Partners and told the Racing Post on Monday: “We haven’t made a decision yet. I'm discussing our options with the owners and we will make a decision in the next 24 hours."

The incident occurred two days after officials at Ffos Lasoverturned two results on the same card on a busy bank holiday weekend for racecourse stewards.
