Ebor up next for Euchen Glen with an Australian adventure on the horizon

Jim Goldie will wait for the handicapper's reaction to Euchen Glen's all-the-way win in the John Smith's Cup on Saturday before deciding on his next move – but it will be a bold one.

The trainer was leaning towards restraining his enthusiasm and waiting for the Sky Bet Ebor back at York next month after Euchen Glen took his Saturday exploits on the Knavesmire in his stride.

"We'll wait to see what the handicapper does but I'd think he'd be into the 100s, to get into the Ebor," said Goldie.

"He didn't have a hard race and has come out of the race so well he could run again sooner, but I think we'll sit on our hands for the five weeks until the Ebor.

"It's not a bad problem to have and I wouldn't swap him for anything in the Ebor, not even the Northumberland Plate winner Withhold.

"He's multi-talented trip-wise and improving with the changed tactics from holding him up in his races over further."

Should Euchen Glen win the Ebor – for which he is 16-1 – Goldie would not rule out following last year's winner Nakeeta's path to Australia.

Goldie added: "Nakeeta wasn't disgraced in the Melbourne Cup (finished fifth) and Euchen Glen has tactical toe so could get a position early, or drop in if needed from a bad draw."

Goldie added his voice to those campaigning for sectional timing at York as it would clear up whether there was a steady early pace in the heritage handicap that some claimed gave Euchen Glen an easy lead.

The trainer mused: "How do you explain how the favourite Dash Of Spice was perfectly placed just behind us but dropped out and those who chased us home came from the back of the field?"
