Following the passing of influential owner-breeder Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, we remember an iconic racing moment in an article first published in the Racing Post on Saturday, May 4, 2019, 30 years on from the famous Nashwan gallop.


The Trial Ground on the summer downs, near West Ilsley in Berkshire, has been trodden by some noble thoroughbreds. It is where Major Dick Hern tested the best of his horses – among them Derby winners Troy and Henbit, the King George and Eclipse winner Ela-Mana-Mou, and the mighty Brigadier Gerard.

Yet none of these greats generated the sense of awe felt by those who witnessed a gallop 30 years ago that quickly passed into racing legend.
