Dettori on standby for Siskin ride in Sussex Stakes if Keane stays in Ireland
Frankie Dettori is the go-to jockey for big-race rides, and the Italian could be set for the mount on Irish 2,000 Guineas hero Siskin in the Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood later this month if regular rider Colin Keane is impeded by quarantine rules.
Speaking on Luck On Sunday, trainer Ger Lyons was hopeful his stable jockey could make the ride for the Group 1 on July 29, but revealed he had a more than able deputy lined up in Dettori.
"There's a very good replacement in the wings," Lyons said. "He [Frankie] has a huge association with that outfit [Juddmonte, owners], he's the best in the world and he's there in the wings if we need him."
On Keane, who would have to face two weeks in quarantine upon returning to Ireland after riding at Goodwood, Lyons added: "The negative is the isolation we have in Ireland but it became very apparent to me last night that these big races matter, and matter hugely, so I'd be dubious to think Colin won't partner him.
"I think subject to discussion with Colin, without putting pressure on him, he'll go to Goodwood and then take a two-week holiday before concentrating on the big races for the rest of the season."
Keane would be following in the footsteps of Seamie Heffernan, who faced two weeks' quarantine after riding at Epsom for the Investec Derby and Oaks, and then Chantilly for the French Oaks.
Keane is currently third in the Irish jockeys' title, 11 winners behind Shane Foley and just one behind Wayne Lordan in second.
