Day two at Royal Ascot: who remains in contention to run on Wednesday?
Cazoo Derby-winning trainer Sir Michael Stoute could bid to land more big-race glory at Ascot next Wednesday after he confirmed the exciting Bay Bridge for a potential clash with Japanese Derby and Sheema Classic winner Shahryar in the Prince of Wales's Stakes (3.40).
Last year's Derby winner Adayar was one of six to be taken out of the Group 1 contest at Thursday's five-day confirmation stage, with Grand Glory supplemented to bring the field up to eight for the feature race on the second day of the royal meeting.
Shahryar, trained by Hideaki Fujiwara, is aiming to provide Japan with a first Royal Ascot success and Yasuhiro Matsumoto, manager of Northern Farm, who bred Shahryar, said: “The transportation went well, especially as Shahryar had experience transporting to Dubai and had another horse with him in the same stall," he said.
“We had plans to bring Shahryar for international races. As a result, Dubai was the first and that experience should be very much a benefit to the horse coming to Royal Ascot.
“As a horseman, I want to win races in the UK with Japanese horses. It is a dream and a real honour for us to have runners at Royal Ascot. Many people think the Arc is the pinnacle, but I think many of the best sire-making races are in the UK.
“Shahryar’s optimum distance is 1m2f to 1m4f. He would prefer firmer ground but I think he can handle softer ground as well."
John and Thady Gosden will be represented by 2020 winner Lord North, while last year’s winning trainer Aidan O’Brien is set to saddle Breeders' Cup Turf runner-up Broome.
Addeybb, who finished second Lord North two years ago, is one of two runners for William Haggas. The trainer could also bid for his first victory in this race with dual French Group 2 winner Dubai Honour.
Prix Ganay winner State Of Rest completes the line-up for Joseph O’Brien, who won this race as a jockey with So You Think in 2013.
Juddmonte International Stakes winner Mishriff, Mostahdaf, Order Of Australia, La Petite Coco and Mother Earth, along with Adayar, were all removed at the five-day confirmation stage.
Instead, Mother Earth looks set to renew her rivalry with Saffron Beach in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes (4.20) as 11 prepare to take their chance for the Group 2 contest.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained filly got the better of her four-year-old opponent in last year’s 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket, but the fortunes were switched in October’s Chariot Stakes as Saffron Beach was triumphant for trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam.
Recent Epsom winner Bashkirova will run for owners Cheveley Park Stud, while the Stoute-trained duo of Lights On and Potapova will also wear the same silks and are being well-supported in the betting.
A total of 21 horses were taken out of the Royal Hunt Cup (5.00) as 72 remain in contention for Wednesday's race. Astro King and Dark Shift are currently the 8-1 ante-post favourites.
Entries were also made for the Queen Mary Stakes (2.30), Queen's Vase (3.05), Windsor Castle Stakes (5.35) and Kensington Palace Handicap (6.10), with fields of 30, 21, 40 and 28 in contention respectively.
