Nowhere in the racing world is like Epsom racecourse - and one aspect of its uniqueness seems likely to jeopardise staging the world's most famous Flat race at its normal home.

The horseshoe track wraps around Epsom and Walton Downs, to which the public is permitted free and open access by act of parliament. As a result, holding a race meeting at Epsom behind closed doors presents huge difficulties.

If the Epsom Classics are moved, sister venue Newmarket - which housed them during the world wars - would be an obvious replacement. Anything deemed to be "a London track" could well be ruled out due to the number of Covid-19 cases in the capital. Ascot and Newbury would be far enough removed to enter consideration.
