Champion sprinter Battaash to appear at the Henry Cecil Newmarket Open Weekend
Former champion sprinter Battaash has been added to the galaxy of stars set to be on show at the Henry Cecil Newmarket Open Weekend in a fortnight's time, when he will meet visitors at the National Horse Racing Museum.
The seven-year-old was retired last month after a lucrative sprinting career for Charlie Hills that yielded four wins at Group 1 level including when smashing the track record at York two years ago in the Nunthorpe Stakes.
The Shadwell Estates-owned gelding won 13 of his 25 starts across six seasons and over £1.7 million in prize-money, but his racing career was brought to an end after failing in his attempt at a record fifth straight win in the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes at Goodwood in July.
The star will be big draw at the two-day Henry Cecil Newmarket Open Weekend, but Battaash will also be at the Palace House site before then as he will be a fixture throughout the first ever National Racehorse Week.
Organiser Charlie Fellowes said: "The plan is to house Battaash at the National Horse Racing Museum during National Racehorse Week from Tuesday, September 14 until Monday, September 20, which will include the two-day Henry Cecil Newmarket Open Weekend on September 18-19."
Frances Stanley, acting chairman of the Trustees of the National Horse Racing Museum, said: "It's incredibly exciting to have a star such as Battaash at the museum and visitors to Newmarket Open Weekend can get to see him as part of their ticket."
Fellowes added: "It's great to have another superstar like Battaash, who has been the most popular sprinter around for many years, to show off to the public. We are incredibly grateful to Sheikha Hissa Hamdan Al Maktoum and all of the team at Shadwell Estates for allowing this to happen."
The addition of Battaash is another exciting aspect to the Open weekend which will have plenty going on, including racing on the Rowley Mile on the Saturday before ending with the Clipper Logistics Racing Personality show jumping on the Sunday.
