ITV Racing was celebrating on Sunday night after winning a Bafta for its coverage of last year's Grand National.

The other three nominations in the sport category for the awards ceremony held at London's Festival Hall were Sky for its coverage of Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko; the BBC for its Six Nations rugby union clash between Wales and England; and Channel 4 for the women's Euro semi-final between England and Holland.

Success against such strong opposition was all the more meritorious since the Grand National show was only the 20th live broadcast ITV Racing had aired after winning the contract to broadcast the sport on terrestrial television from Channel 4. The first had been on a hideously wet New Year's Day at Cheltenham, barely three months earlier.

Lead presenter Ed Chamberlin beforehand credited director Paul McNamara, a previous Bafta winner, for the nomination, while also identifying Richard Willoughby, Paul Cooper, Tim Williams and Rachael Jackson as other key members of the team behind the cameras.
