Can Joseph O'Brien make it three wins in six years with Powerful Kieran?
Monday: 6.45 Galway
Eventus Handicap | 1m4½f | 3yo | RTE2/RTV
Joseph O'Brien has won this three-year-old handicap twice in the last five years, including with the favourite Flying Scotsman last year, so it is interesting to see him rely on Powerful Kieran this time around.
The Protectionist gelding remains a maiden after six starts but was a head away from breaking his duck at Fairyhouse last month. He was beaten a head by Female Approach when rated 68 so must have claims here off just 4lb higher if able to put a below-par effort at the Curragh behind him.
National Ballet is not supposed to be dancing on stages like this. He is a Deep Impact colt whose dam, Fluff, is a sister to the one-time star juvenile Maybe. He opened his account at the fourth attempt at Limerick earlier this month and it looks like there could be much more to come.
Although the handicapper has punished him with a 12lb hike in the weights it may not be enough to prevent him from following up. He might just be a class apart.
What they say
Dermot Weld, trainer of Port Sunlight
She’s a very consistent filly, the only thing is she has a lot of weight to carry. Ten stone is a lot of weight to carry at Galway. But I was very pleased with her last run – the first two pulled clear of the rest – and if she can reproduce that, she’s going to be in the shake-up.
Jessica Harrington, trainer of Citronnade
She won her maiden well at Killarney and she could have a nice mark stepping into a handicap. Hopefully she can run well.
Matthew Smith, trainer of Razdan
He ran a cracker at Ballinrobe after missing the start. Hopefully he breaks a bit better here because if he does what he did at Ballinrobe it is game over. If he does come away with them, you'd like to think he has a decent chance from his draw and he's in good form.
Joseph O'Brien, trainer of Powerful Kieran
He met quite a bit of traffic last time at the Curragh but before that he had put two good runs together. We think the stiff finish will suit him well and we give him a good each-way chance.
