Brodie Hampson suffers fractured vertebrae in Newton Abbot fall
Amateur rider Brodie Hampson is thought to have suffered fractured vertebrae in a fall at Newton Abbot on Tuesday evening.
The jockey was partnering Saxo Jack for Sophie Leech in a 2m1f handicap hurdle for lady amateur riders, when suffering a heavy fall aboard the eight-year-old at the fourth flight.
Hampson was knocked unconscious in the fall and was attended to at length on track, before being taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth for further assessment. She had regained consciousness by the time she left the track.
Trainer John O'Shea, who is Hampson's boss, said on Wednesday morning: "I believe she has a couple of fractured vertebrae. Her family is with her and she'll be having further tests this morning."
Hampson has yet to get off the mark for the new season, but rode five winners from 55 rides last season. She also landed the 2016 Royal Artillery Gold Cup at Sandown in the colours of her father Mark.
