Trainer Paul Robson has been airlifted to hospital after breaking multiple bones in his pelvis in a fall when riding out at his Northumberland stable.

Robson, 41, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle on Thursday. He does not require surgery but expects to remain in hospital for a few weeks while he is helped to walk again.

His Hazelrigg stable, which has already matched last season's tally of five winners, will continue to run under the management of his wife Steph and their family.

Robson said: “I saw the surgeon on Friday and he’s satisfied that I don't need an operation. There are three breaks in my pelvis and I have a fracture at the bottom of my tailbone.

“Thankfully they’re all clean breaks, so they should heal naturally without the need for any pins or plates, which is great news.

"I’m lacking the motor skills to walk, so I’ll be in the hospital for a few weeks until that all comes back. The RVI has been absolutely phenomenal looking after me. I’m getting three physio sessions a day at the moment and couldn’t be in a better place."

The yard, which he took over from Rose Dobbin last year, does not have any upcoming entries but celebrated a winner on New Year's Day at Musselburgh with Okavango Delta.

He added: “Our horses haven’t missed a minute of work just because I’m not there. I’ve been keeping myself busy in my bed looking at entries and catching up on the admin work. It’s been good to have something to keep my mind occupied.

"It doesn’t look like there’s going to be much racing to miss this week anyway, so hopefully I’ll be back on the yard and at the track before too long.”

Robson's riding career was cut short after he sustained injuries in a fall in 2005 and he went on to run his family's funeral business. He launched a training career in 2020 with Henrietta Knight helping to source horses for him.

He described the support he has received since his injury as "overwhelming". Fellow trainer Nicky Richards, who spent three weeks in hospital after a gallops fall in November, is among those to be in contact.

Robson said: "I’m really grateful to everyone who has taken the time to make contact. Nicky Richards had a similar situation recently but is firmly on the mend and hearing from him has given me a real morale boost."
