Fionn McSharry: recovering at home after a serious accident in Malton

Trainer Fionn McSharry has been discharged from hospital after being injured in a freak accident on the Malton gallops.

McSharry, 33, was severely hurt when unloading two horses at the gallops on Wednesday morning last week. She was trapped in the confined space of the horsebox and suffered multiple fractures and lacerations.

McSharry's father Chris, a former trainer and now assistant, was present to help alongside others on the gallops, including trainer Nigel Tinkler. She was swiftly airlifted to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, where she underwent extensive surgery lasting 11 hours.

The injured trainer spent five days in hospital but was discharged on Monday morning. She will now undergo the long process of recovery with the help of her father, her partner Keith and the staff at her Dudley Hill Farm yard.

McSharry formerly served as Richard Fahey's travelling head lass and had ten rides under rules, including finishing second in the 2016 Queen Mother's Cup at York. She began her training enterprise last year and saddled her first runner in January 2023, having taken over from her father at the Malton yard.

Since striking out on her own, she has had four winners under rules, most recently with Maxi Boy, a former Amo Racing runner who contested the Coventry in 2019 and won at Newcastle this month.

The family are appreciative of the help of the racing community in Malton alongside the work of the staff at James Cook Hospital.
