'They'll be forces to be reckoned with next year' - Charlie Appleby on his exciting colts set to stay in training

Classic winner Notable Speech and top three-year-olds Arabian Crown and Ancient Wisdom look likely to remain in training next season as part of a strong team of older horses for Charlie Appleby.

The trainer worked seven horses on the Rowley Mile before racing on Saturday morning, including Notable Speech, who enjoyed a six-furlong exercise under Paul Eddery. Arabian Crown (William Buick) and Ancient Wisdom (James Doyle) shared company in a separate exercise alongside senior globetrotter Nations Pride (Adie McCarthy), in which all three passed the stands on the bridle. 

Appleby sent most of his older team to Saratoga this year and enjoyed plenty of success, but the trainer could be about to up his game domestically in that department in 2025.

"As we all know I'm in a period where I'm rebuilding and the older horses are what we need," said the trainer. "I’m not going to force issues just for this year with the likes of Ancient Wisdom and Arabian Crown who, together with Notable Speech, will potentially be forces to be reckoned with next year. Fortunately, we’ve had some nice two-year-olds to fill in the gaps for the moment."

Notable Speech will miss next week's Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and be aimed at the Breeders' Cup Mile, having raced abroad when last seen at Longchamp last time.

The 2,000 Guineas and Sussex Stakes winner finished fifth in the Prix du Moulin, in which the soft ground was not to his liking. The likelihood of a similar surface at Ascot has prompted the Godolphin team to look elsewhere.

Ancient Wisdom was last seen in action winning the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy at the July festival and will be aimed at the Group 1 Grosser Allianz Preis von Bayern on November 10. 

"He’s done well," said Appleby. "We purposely didn’t go to the St Leger meeting as he wants it properly testing. He’s a horse I genuinely think will make a lovely four-year-old. We’ll campaign him purposely in the second half of the season next year. He thrives on this sort of ground and the plan is to take him to Germany."

Arabian Crown was made favourite for the Derby after winning the Classic Trial at Sandown in April, but did not make the race due to a setback. 

"He looks great and has done fantastic," added Appleby. "We may look at coming back here for the Listed James Seymour Stakes next month and then head out to Dubai, where he could go for the City of Gold and then the Sheema Classic. He could be a lovely middle-distance horse for next year.

"As for the others, Nations Pride, who we’ve not seen since he won the Arlington Million, is heading to Bahrain for the International Trophy next month."
