Meet the rookie Newmarket trainer in red-hot form after five winners from his last six runners
Rookie handler Jack Morland has fired up a freezing cold Newmarket in recent weeks with a whirlwind start to his career that has yielded five winners from his last six runners.
The 29-year-old set up base less than a mile away from his former boss Ed Dunlop only on October 1 and has not looked back since, most notably when racking up a four-timer with handicapper Angel Of Antrim in the space of just 15 days over Christmas.
Morland has just a dozen horses to go to war with at Exeter House Stables, which he shares with his landlord Charlie McBride on the Exeter Road, but is already looking forward to even more success in the coming days.
He said: “I couldn’t have foreseen having a better start to my training career to be honest. I don’t look at the stats too much but it’s been an unbelievably good Christmas and long may it continue, but we all know it doesn’t.
"We’ve had interest from a few new people since our run of success which is very nice and a massive boost to the team here.“
Morland has a number of friends that helped get him started without whom he admits he would be struggling.
He added: “I have to take my hat off to all my owners to thank them for their support, without them it wouldn’t be possible. Also, I have to give a big thank you to my team, especially Rachel Davies and Harriet Bryce, who have been with me since day one on October 1. It’s as much about their support and hard work that has made this flying start possible.”
Morland spent time in Australia and also with Brian Meehan before his five years with Dunlop, from whom he still seeks advice.
He added: “Ed has been great and I’m also very grateful to Charlie McBride for renting part of his yard, which is completely secluded and quiet even though we are in the middle of Newmarket. The horses seem healthy here and the proof is with the results. I couldn’t be happier.”
Angel Of Antrim started out off a mark of 51 before three wins at Newcastle and one at Wolverhampton elevated him to a rating of 85.
Morland said: “Cosmo Ball does a great job on Angel Of Antrim at home. The horse has always showed ability and I thought he’d run well first time out. I thought he could improve and win a race but never thought he would improve 34lb, and to win four races is phenomenal.
"The application of a visor and dropping back in trip has proved the key. He has two entries at the weekend, but there is also a £45.000 handicap over a mile at Newcastle next week.”
By then, Morland is hoping to have hit the board again on Thursday when he runs Starshiba (2.32) at Lingfield and Sonic Pioneer (6.00) at Chelmsford. He added: “Starshiba went up 3lb for his win at Lingfield last week and is running with a 4lb penalty. However, he loves it round Lingfield and should have a good chance.”
