Leicester calls inspection for Monday card after 'biblical' 45mm of rain in an hour and a half on Saturday
Leicester's seven-race Flat fixture on Monday is subject to an inspection at 3.30 on Sunday after 45mm of rain hit the East Midlands track in an hour and a half on Saturday.
The going had been good to firm, good in places but on Sunday morning was eased to soft with heavy waterlogged areas.
Heavy rain is forecast for most of Sunday and Monday, with a yellow Met Office weather warning in place for rain in the area on both days.
Clerk of the course Jimmy Stevenson said at 9am Sunday morning: "It was biblical yesterday and all that rain came down in an hour and a half. It was unbelievable.
"You don't see it very often, maybe once every couple of years before, but with global warming it's happening a bit more often and the infrastructure can't cope with that amount of rain in such a short period of time.
"The rain is set in for today and tomorrow, which is not ideal as we need it to stop and let things settle down.
"We are forecast 15-20 millimetres of rain today and the same tomorrow and if the forecast is right we would be struggling. The worst part is in the dip in the straight but we'll take stock this afternoon and see if there is any improvement."
The start of the second half between Leicester City and Everton at the King Power Stadium – less than four miles away from the racecourse – was delayed on Saturday afternoon due to the heavy rain. Everton boss Sean Dyche told the BBC "he had never experienced conditions as bad as that".
