Jockey Rhys Elliott out of hospital after suffering multiple injuries in Newcastle fall
Jockey Rhys Elliott has been discharged from hospital after suffering multiple injuries in a fall at Newcastle last week.
The apprentice was riding the Michael Dods-trained Masterpainter in the mile handicap when he came down among horses with just over a furlong to go.
There was a delay to racing as Elliott was attended to before being transported to Royal Victoria Infirmary hospital in Newcastle, where he was found to have suffered a punctured lung as well as some small fractures to his neck and spine.
The incident was reviewed by stewards at Newcastle, but was deemed accidental.
In a social media post on Sunday, Dods, who last week reported Masterpainter to be okay, said: "It's great news that our apprentice Rhys Elliott is back home with his family following his recent fall from Masterpainter at Newcastle.
"Although he's still uncomfortable, the medical staff at the Royal Victoria Infirmary are happy for him to continue his rest and rehabilitation at home in Hawick.
"Rhys's instructions are to stick to walking for the next six weeks. After that, they'll do a re-scan and, if that goes well, he can start doing physio and exercise.
"Rhys's mum Kerry has thanked the Injured Jockeys Fund for their invaluable support. Everyone here at Denton Hall is wishing Rhys a speedy recovery."
