'If you sit on your hands, you will lose out' - how the Cheltenham Festival-winning jockey-turned-bloodstock agent bought Sir Gino
The Cheltenham Festival-winning jockey responsible for buying jump racing star Sir Gino has lifted the lid on the “special” talent who stunned Kempton with one of the greatest chasing debuts ever seen in modern times.
And Jerry McGrath, who won the Fred Winter and Ultima Handicap Chase for Nicky Henderson during his riding career, believes the odds-on Arkle favourite is “just going to keep improving” on his stellar performance last week.
Sir Gino, who was the first horse that McGrath bought for high-profile owners Joe and Marie Donnelly, recorded a Racing Post Rating of 166 when beating Ballyburn by seven and a half lengths in the Ladbrokes Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase, a 6lb higher figure than illustrious Seven Barrows stars Altior and Shishkin registered on their chasing debuts.
