Ian Renton urges racing to 'remain at the forefront' of people's leisure interests as Cheltenham MD steps down after 12 years
Outgoing Cheltenham managing director Ian Renton has urged racing to continue to focus on a diverse range of potential spectators and investors to ensure the sport “remains at the forefront of interest”.
Renton, 66, is stepping down from his position at Cheltenham after completing 12 years in the role on New Year’s Day. Guy Lavender, the former chief executive of Marylebone Cricket Club, will be in charge for the racecourse’s next fixture on January 25.
During his time running Cheltenham, Renton oversaw the redevelopment of the Princess Royal Stand and the growth of the Cheltenham Festival, culminating in a record four-day attendance at the meeting of 280,627 in 2022.
