'I need to pull my finger out' - Osbornes search for the next Toast Of New York to further Saffie's remarkable rise

It's been a sensational season for Saffie Osborne, who sits seventh in the jockeys' championship and has her sights firmly set on a first century of winners – but her father Jamie has admitted to feeling somewhat guilty that he hasn't found a superstar horse to propel her rise even more.

Saffie Osborne was speaking to the Racing Post for a major interview in Sunday's newspaper in which she discusses her eyecatching views on sexism in the saddle, her youthful obsession with Sea The Stars and feeling like she has to bring up her own father, who couldn't stop himself shoehorning his way into the conversation – much to his daughter's consternation.

The 22-year-old is absolutely flying at the moment and now says she is looking for the one horse who will "change everything", as Dream Ahead did for pioneering female jockey Hayley Turner – ideally trained by her father or Ed Walker, who has also been a huge ally in her career.

"I'd love Dad to have another Toast Of New York," she said, referring to the horse who won the UAE Derby and finished second in the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2014. "There's nothing that would give me more joy than riding a big winner for somebody like him or Ed, who's been such a massive part of my career, to repay them for the faith and trust they've put in you."

Osborne is also certain she would handle the big occasion when it comes, given she was a European Championship winner in the showjumping arena.

"I've never been in such a high-pressure environment as showjumping on the final day in a situation where you can either win or lose a gold medal for your team," she recalled. "I always remember Mum quoting Billie Jean King saying that pressure is a privilege. You work so hard to get yourself into those positions, to have the opportunity to perform under pressure and they're situations I feel I thrive in."

These are sentiments with which her father agrees with, especially the bit about Toast Of New York. Indeed, he feels a bit guilty about not having produced another one for his daughter already, by way of repayment for reviving his working spirit.

"She needs that big horse and it's my fault that she hasn't got one," said Jamie. "I need to up the ante a little bit, pull my finger out and give us the chance. I've got the enthusiasm and the energy to do it, which I may not have had if she weren't here, to be honest. It's brought a new dimension to what I'm doing and it's a very enjoyable one."
