How are the markets shaping up for five of the major Group 1s and handicaps to come this autumn?
As autumn approaches we have looked forward to some of the top-class races still to be run this season. From the St Leger, the year's final British Classic, to the prestigious Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, we assess how the markets are shaping up ahead of a busy two months . . .
Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes
Where: Leopardstown
When: September 14, 3.25
Economics was cut to 4-1 (from 7) by Betfair for the Irish Champion Stakes on Saturday week after his impressive Prix Guillaume d'Ornano success at Deauville. He has since shortened to 6-4 favourite with the same firm.
Connections suggested Leopardstown was under consideration after his win in France, and a clash with Auguste Rodin, who is 7-2, is on the cards after Aidan O'Brien's star produced an "excellent" piece of work according to his trainer. Stablemates Luxembourg and Los Angeles are also on course for Irish Champions Festival.
Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes, September 14
Betfair: 6-4 Economics, 7-2 Auguste Rodin, 6 Los Angeles, 7 Opera Singer, 14 Al Riffa, Ghostwriter, 16 Luxembourg, Shin Emperor, 20 Anmaat, 22 bar.
Betfred St Leger
Where: Doncaster
When: September 14, 3.40
Ballydoyle master O'Brien is heavily represented in the market for the final Classic of the season, with Illinois (7-4), Grosvenor Square and Jan Brueghel (4-1) all on course for Doncaster.
Illinois was denied by a neck in the Great Voltigeur at York by stablemate Los Angeles, but Grosvenor Square was a runaway winner in the Irish Leger Trial last month. At Glorious Goodwood, Jan Brueghel extended his winning sequence to three in the Gordon Stakes, beating Bellum Justum, who has since franked the form when landing a valuable Kentucky Downs Grade 3.
Betfred St Leger, September 14
Sky Bet: 7-4 Illinois, 4 Grosvenor Square, Jan Brueghel, 13-2 Sunway, 7 Ancient Wisdom, 12 Deira Mile, Los Angeles, 20 Align The Stars, 22 bar.
bet365 Cambridgeshire
Where: Newmarket
When: September 28, 3.40
A recent short-head success at Goodwood for the William Haggas-trained Godwinson has seen him sit top of the market for the highly competitive 1m1f handicap. He is now 10-1 favourite (from 16) with race sponsors bet365.
Karl Burke's Thunder Run, who landed the Clipper Handicap at York last time out, enhanced his credentials for the race and is now a 14-1 shot (from 25), while stablemates Bolster and Holloway Boy are also prominent in the market.
bet365 Cambridgeshire, September 28
bet365: 10 Godwinson, 14 Thunder Run, 16 Bolster, Cicero's Gift, Holloway Boy, Mount Teide, Roi De France, 20 bar.
Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe
Where: Longchamp
When: October 6, 3.00
Europe's greatest race looks to be on the radar for Joseph O'Brien after Al Riffa's eyecatching Grosser Preis von Berlin victory last time out. He's 10-1 (from 14) with Paddy Power for the 1m4f contest and is third favourite behind Look De Vega and Sosie, who represent the home side.
O'Brien's Opera Singer is 12-1 with the same firm, although the three-year-old filly has a whole host of top-level entries after landing the Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last time.
Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, October 6
Paddy Power: 11-4 Look De Vega, 6 Sosie, 10 Al Riffa, 12 Opera Singer, 14 Delius, 16 Los Angeles, Shin Emperor, 20 bar.
Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Handicap
Where: Newmarket
When: October 12, 3.00
Willie Mullins dominates the ante-post market for the Cesarewitch with Hipop De Loire (8-1) and Royal Ascot winner Belloccio (10-1) prominent in the betting.
However, Sir Mark Prescott could hold a strong hand in the 2m2f contest as both Pledgeofallegiance and Godsend are in winning form. The former, also a winner at the royal meeting, is unbeaten in his last two outings, while Godsend brought up the hat-trick at Pontefract last month.
Club Godolphin Cesarewitch Handicap, October 12
William Hill: 8-1 Hipop De Loire, 10 Belloccio, Jacovec Cavern, Pledgeofallegiance, 14 Filey Bay, Godsend, Plontier, Tactician, 16 bar.
