'He's right where we want him' - Economics delights William Haggas in key piece of work before Champion Stakes
William Haggas put his likely team for Qipco British Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday week through their paces on the Limekilns in Newmarket on Thursday morning headed by Champion Stakes favourite Economics.
The Irish Champion Stakes hero was ridden by his usual partner Cieren Fallon in a mile workout on the round gallop with two older stablemates and came through on the bridle at the business end to finish on top.
The exercise was similar to that of three years ago when the mighty Baaeed used the same facility prior to winning the Group 1 QEII Stakes at the same meeting.
A general 5-4 favourite to give Haggas a second win in the 1m2f Ascot feature following Addeybb's success in 2020, Economics will be bidding to become the first winner of the Irish equivalent to follow up at Ascot since Magical in 2019.
Haggas said: "Economics is in good shape and is right where we want him at the present time. He's the biggest name on our card for Ascot at least and we couldn't be happier with him."
Others in evidence on the Limekilns were Sprint Cup winner Montassib, who was partnered by Michael Hills and bids for a Group 1 double in the Qipco British Champions Sprint in which Haggas plans to be two-handed.
He said: "At the moment, Montassib will run in the Sprint where he will be joined by Unequal Love. Both are in good shape and worked nicely this morning."
Montassib, who landed the Sprint Cup under Fallon, is 6-1 second favourite for the 6f contest, with Unequal Love a 10-1 chance.
Haggas won the Balmoral Handicap with favourite Aldaary three years ago and intends to run Elnajmm and Treasure Time in the meeting's finale.
