'He's in the form of his life' - four outsiders to keep on side at Cheltenham today - including a 16-1 shot

Cheltenham is the star attraction on ITV today, with competitive fields set across four races being broadcast from the track. We've taken a look at some outsiders who could outrun their odds in each of those contests . . .

The Newest One

1.50 Cheltenham: Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Coming Soon Handicap Chase

Chianti Classico is understandably taking a lot of the market and he is the obvious class of the field.

However, to win off a mark of 157 will take a quite spectacular weight carrying performance and, while I certainly wouldn't rule it out, I am happy to take him on at 6-4 - especially with eight runners in the field.

The one who catches the eye is The Newest One, who is 4lb out of the handicap which perhaps explains why he is a double-figure price.

However, his last two runs have been comfortably the best of his career and he looks like he has really started to take to chasing having reverted back to hurdles last season.

He is in the form of his life and goes well at Cheltenham so there is surely some each-way value to be had if all of the eight runners stand their ground.

2.25 Cheltenham: Unibet Middle Distance Veterans' Chase Series Handicap Chase

Shan Blue has been backed into favouritism but, while he is handicapped to go well here, there are risks attached to backing a favourite who has not won a race since 2020.

Seddon and Shakem Up'Arry have obvious chances given their course form, but I can't understand the price of Raffle Ticket who is in the form of his life, despite being the ripe old age of ten.

Raffle Ticket has recorded RPRs of 145, 141 and 140 in three of his last four runs and is clearly improving.

The market clearly thinks an 8lb rise for his win at Aintree last time is too much defy, but he won with so much in hand from the improving and unexposed Soul Icon, who was second in a Grade 3 handicap on his next start, beaten a neck in Grade 2 the start after and ran in the Grade 1 Henry VIII Novices' Chase last time out, so the form looks solid.

His only blip in his last four starts came when pulled up on soft ground which he hates, so this ground is perfect for him, as is the 2m4½f trip, which can't be said for all of the field. He also has Harry Cobden in the saddle who rides this particular track as good as anyone.

Coko Beach

3.00 Cheltenham: Glenfarclas Crystal Cup Cross Country Handicap Chase, 3m5½f

Gordon Elliott is mob-handed in the Cross Country Chase, but one of his lesser fancied of his five runners in Coko Beach looks very appealing at a double-figure price.

The nine-year-old has never ran on this unique track before, but does have winning form around Punchestown's banks track earlier this year, as well as running a terrific race before unseating in the Velka Pardubicka in October too.

He was fifth in a banks race at Punchestown last time when he had excuses, but also has winning form over as far as 3m4f and races off just a 2lb higher mark than his win in last year's Troytown Handicap Chase.

Carl Millar takes 5lb off too and a big field over these obstacles could see him thrive again.

Zain Nights

3.35 Cheltenham: Citipost Handicap Hurdle, 3m

Zain Nights needs to bounce back to his best, but this track may just be the perfect place for him to do so in the concluding 3m handicap hurdle.

Trained by Lucy Wadham, the five-year-old was highly progressive earlier this year when rattling off a hat-trick at Newbury, over this course and distance and in a competitive handicap hurdle at Haydock in May.

He returned with a good third off of his current mark of 130 at the October meeting here behind The Wallpark, who has since been bought by JP McManus and holds Grade 1 entries, before he was pulled up on Betfair Chase day at Haydock.

The deteriorating ground conditions could have played a factor there and on his best form, this sounder surface should suit him far better.
