Godolphin add Middle Park winner to Dewhurst mix as only three trainers have runners - plus the Cesarewitch has a new favourite
Middle Park winner Shadow Of Light has been supplemented at a cost of £35,000 for the Darley Dewhurst Stakes (3.00) on Saturday, when he will bid to become only the second this century to do the double in Newmarket's two autumn Group 1s for colts.
Godolphin's smart prospect powered clear of Whistlejacket by four lengths two weeks ago and he could look to lower the colours of another Ballydoyle star with Derby favourite The Lion In Winter among just eight remaining on course for the race.
The Ballydoyle trainer is responsible for five left at Monday's confirmation stage, including Camille Pissarro, who won the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp on Sunday. Recent winners Aftermath and Expanded were also kept in as well as Rock Of Cashel.
The Lion In Winter emerged as Aidan O'Brien's most exciting juvenile prospect when holding off Wimbledon Hawkeye and Ruling Court in impressive fashion in the Acomb Stakes at York, although he missed an intended run in the Goffs Million a fortnight ago with a foot bruise.
O'Brien is seeking a record-breaking ninth win in the Dewhurst, 12 months on from the success of subsequent Derby winner City Of Troy. He also trained US Navy Flag to complete the Middle Park-Dewhurst double in 2017.
Godolphin also kept in Ancient Truth, who will also put his unbeaten record on the line for Charlie Appleby. The Dubawi colt made it three on the trot when a one-and-a-half length winner of the Superlative Stakes in July and his trainer has already outlined his hopes for next year's 2,000 Guineas.
Hugo Palmer is the only other trainer to have a runner in the race with Seagulls Eleven, who was third in the National Stakes at the Curragh last month. Scorthy Champ and Wimbledon Hawkeye were among the biggest names to be taken out.
Elsewhere, Belloccio, the ante-post favourite for the Club Godolphin Cesarewitch (3.40), was not confirmed for Saturday's £175,000 handicap.
The Willie Mullins-trained 10-1 chance has not raced since winning at Royal Ascot but since the confirmations his stablemate Sea Of Sands has become the new market leader.
The six-year-old has not raced on the Flat since August 2022 but made a winning start for Britain and Ireland's champion jump trainer over hurdles at Listowel two weeks ago and William Buick has been booked to ride.
