Five of the best: Sam Twiston-Davies's most high-profile winning rides
Dodging Bullets
Queen Mother Champion Chase, Cheltenham 2015
Although I had partnered him to Grade 1 success prior to the festival, that did not feel as important as winning my first championship race for Paul [Nicholls]. He had been given a nice break by Paul and his team leading up to the race and was as fresh as a daisy for the big day. Even now I can still vividly recall the cheers from the big crowd as we passed the winning post and deep down inside it was a very moving moment.
Baby Run
Foxhunter Chase, Cheltenham 2010
I had been third on him in the race 12 months earlier behind Cappa Bleu and perhaps did not make enough use of him. He had excelled front-running afterwards and the plan inside my head was to attempt to do the same but at Cheltenham you have to get those tactics spot-on and luckily we did. He's the one who really helped get me going when I was an upstart amateur rider and I'll always have a soft spot for him as a result.
Hello Bud
Becher Handicap Chase, Aintree 2012
Somebody said the horse was nearly as old as me at the time. He was 14 years old and most people had written him off as way past his sell-by date going into the race, so to win the Becher for the second time was something very special from a very special horse. He may not have been the quickest on four legs but he kept galloping and jumping and they are massive assets in a staying chaser. He was retired straight after the race and deservedly so.
The New One
Neptune Novices’ Hurdle, Cheltenham 2013
What a horse! An absolute superstar – he won 20 races and more than £1m in prize-money. Horses like him don't come along very often. I rode him on 35 occasions and won on him 18 times. He never knew when he was beaten, which was not that often. It’s difficult to pin down his best performance over his amazing career but I think winning the Neptune was right up there as it was his first Grade 1 and stamped him a class act.
Vicente
Scottish Grand National, Ayr 2017
Success for the second year running in such a competitive staying handicap chase as the Scottish National is most definitely noteworthy, to say the least. It was another great piece of training by Paul and everybody at Ditcheat. He had come down at the first fence in the Grand National a couple of weeks previously and the ground in Scotland came right for him but he still had something to prove as his form had been in and out. I have an obvious soft spot for these staying chasers and he gave me everything that day.
