Economics, Kyprios and Porta Fortuna moved into contention to be named Cartier Horse of the Year after victories at the Irish Champions Festival this weekend.

The former produced a dazzling display to hold off Auguste Rodin (88) in the Irish Champion Stakes to take his ranking Pattern points to 80.

The scores horses accumulate account for 30 per cent of the final verdict, with opinions of a panel of racing journalists and handicappers, as well as votes from Racing Post and Daily Telegraph readers, taken into consideration.

Derby hero City Of Troy shares top spot with dual Group 1-winning miler Charyn in the standings, with a total of 144 points, but Kyprios (120) and Porta Fortuna (120) are only 24 points behind in second.

Super stayer Kyprios landed the Irish St Leger in impressive fashion on Sunday. He also heads the race to be Champion Stayer with a lead of 74 over Friday's Doncaster Cup winner Sweet William and stablemate Jan Brueghel (48), who won the St Leger.

Porta Fortuna established a clear lead in the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly award when holding off Fallen Angel to take the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown. The Donnacha O'Brien-trained runner was completing a Group 1 hat-trick having landed the Coronation and Falmouth after going close in the 1,000 Guineas.

Bluestocking (104) became the fifth horse to achieve a triple-digit score with her courageous display in the Prix Vermeille. The Ralph Beckett-trained four-year-old held off Aventure to win for a second time at the top-level this season. She also closed the gap on Charyn in the Older Horse division, although Roger Varian's colt increased his score at the start of the month when second to Tribalist in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp.

Bradsell (64) overtook Mill Stream (60) to lead in the Cartier Sprinter division with victory in the Flying Five at the Curragh. Runner-up Believing (52) is third in the standings.

Simmering (44) also edged ahead in an open Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly rankings. She added to her tally with second place in the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the winner Lake Victoria (40) moved into contention with that success. The unbeaten Phoenix Stakes winner Babouche (40) is also joint-second.

Whistlejacket (64) maintained his lead in the Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt division, ahead of Henri Matisse (48) and Scorthy Champ (36) who battled out the finish of the National Stakes this weekend.

The 34th Cartier Racing Awards will take place at the Dorchester Hotel in London on November 20.
