Bluestocking, Charyn, City Of Troy and Kyprios in the running for Cartier Horse of the Year
Bluestocking, Charyn, City Of Troy or Kyprios will be crowned Cartier Horse of the Year 2024 on Wednesday after finalists for the awards were revealed on Sunday.
Each of the Horse of the Year contenders are in the running for other accolades at the awards evening, which is in its 34th year, while City Of Troy and Kyprios both have the opportunity to add to previous Cartier awards.
Bluestocking, who ended her career with a brilliant victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, is among the nominations for Cartier Older Horse, as is the year’s leading miler, Charyn. Rebel’s Romance and Goliath are the other two nominees.
City Of Troy, who won the prize for Two-Year-Old Colt last year, has been nominated in the Three-Year-Old Colt category alongside Classic winners Notable Speech and Rosallion, plus Calandagan.
As well as being nominated for Horse of the Year, Kyprios could win the Stayer award again, having taken that prize in 2022. The six-year-old won all seven of his races this year and became trainer Aidan O’Brien’s winningmost horse at Group 1 level.
Also nominated for the Stayer award are St Leger winner Jan Brueghel, Sweet William and Double Major, the back-to-back winner of the Prix Royal-Oak.
Asfoora could emulate Black Caviar by becoming an Australian-trained winner at the Cartier Awards. She has been nominated in the Sprinter category alongside Bradsell, Starlust and Kind Of Blue.
Kalpana, Porta Fortuna, Ramatuelle and Tamfana are up for Three-Year-Old Filly, while Ireland dominates the nominations for the two-year-old categories.
Six of the eight horses nominated for Two-Year-Old Colt and Filly are trained in Ireland, with Henri Matisse, Whistlejacket and Hotazhell in the colts’ list and Lake Victoria, Babouche and Fairy Godmother in the fillies’ list. Godolphin pair Shadow Of Light (Colt) and Desert Flower (Filly) complete the line-ups.
The nominees for each category are selected by a combination of points awarded for performances in Pattern races during the Flat season, the opinions of an expert panel and votes from readers of the Racing Post and the Daily Telegraph.
