Bric-a-brac not Istabraq: car booters mistakenly gatecrash Sedgefield fixture
An apparent search for the Sunday market led to the bizarre sight of a car entering the track at Sedgefield and driving down close to the parade ring shortly after the second race.
The red hatchback, with a young male behind the wheel and another in the passenger seat, appeared to have entered through the main gate and driven behind the back of the Paxton Stand.
It turned and made to drive back out again but was quickly surrounded by security staff and forced to halt outside the Denys Smith winners' suite.
After security attempted to converse with the driver, the car drove back out the main gate, which is kept open during racing for ambulance access.
Course general manager Emma White said: "They followed a jockey's car in and thought the car boot sale was back on.
"It's normally here on a Sunday and very popular with everyone in the area, all ages – but it's not been staged since lockdown. There were no security issues."
