Paddy Power no longer taking bets on champion-elect Oisin Murphy

There may be just under a month until the culmination of the Flat jockeys' championship but as far as bookmakers are concerned the title belongs to Oisin Murphy, with firms no longer taking wagers.

A Newbury double on Friday took Murphy to 151 winners for the season, which runs from 2,000 Guineas day (May 4) to Champions Day (October 19). He is 38 winners ahead of nearest rival Danny Tudhope, who has just 29 days to bridge the gap.

Murphy has taken a staggering 747 rides since May 4 and, building on the major successes of last season, he can add Group 1 triumphs on Deirdre in the Nassau Stakes and Veracious in the Falmouth Stakes to his resume.

He also partnered a Royal Ascot winner in the Queen’s Vase aboard Dashing Willoughby for Andrew Balding, who has been an integral part of Murphy’s development from his days as an apprentice, and has provided him with 33 winners from 153 rides om 2019.

Paddy Power spokesman Paul Binfield said: "It's all over, the trading desk aren't even offering 1-200 and we've taken the market down. As far as we're concerned, Oisin Murphy will be crowned champion jockey at Ascot in less than a month.

"He is nearly 40 winners clear, hasn't had a ban all year, and we don’t even think an act of God could stop him landing a first championship."
