Bookmakers hit for six by Byrnes treble
Industry left facing estimated seven-figure payout
Charles Byrnes was the bane of the bookmakers last night as a treble at Roscommon hit layers for what was estimated to be an industry-wide seven-figure sum.
All three winners were partnered by Davy Russell, with War Anthem, Mr Smith and Top Of The Town giving the trainer his first ever treble and bookmakers another headache coming hot on the heels of an inglorious Goodwood.
War Anthem and Top Of The Town had been backed from 16-1 in the morning to starting prices of 6-1 and 5-4, while Mr Smith’s early price of 14-1 shrank to an SP of 7-4. A very early treble would have paid 4,334-1.
