Super Sunday: Bob Olinger, Flooring Porter and Edwardstone headline star casts
Bob Olinger, Flooring Porter, Ferny Hollow and Edwardstone lead the star names in action at Navan and Cheltenham on Sunday in what is set to be a top-quality day of jumps action.
Winner of last year’s Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle, Bob Olinger reverts to hurdles after an indifferent season over fences last term.
The seven-year-old takes on eight rivals in the Grade 2 Railway Bar Lismullen Hurdle (1.55) headed by dual Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle winner Flooring Porter and Zanahiyr, who was placed behind Honeysuckle in the Irish Champion Hurdle and the Champion Hurdle last season.
Sunday’s card at Navan will also feature the return of star novice chaser Ferny Hollow after nearly a year off, with the seven-year-old one of seven runners in the Grade 2 Muldoon & Gormley Fortria Chase (2.30).
Trained by Willie Mullins for Cheveley Park Stud, Ferny Hollow was a decisive winner of both his starts over fences last season, but injury prevented him from running again after his success in the Grade 1 Racing Post Novice Chase at Leopardstown on December 26.
Ferny Hollow defeated Riviere D'Etel in that contest, with the mare once again in opposition on Sunday, alongside the likes of Captain Guinness and Andy Dufresne.
Edwardstone v Nube Negra confirmed with 16 in line for the Greatwood
Irish-trained runners also appear to hold the upper hand in the Unibet Greatwood Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham on Sunday (2.55) with Thousand Tears, trained by Emmet Mullins, and Dads Lad, trained by Willie Mullins, topping the 16 declarations for the 2m contest.
Thousand Tears, who finished behind Dads Lad on the Flat at Galway in the summer, heads the betting for the Greatwood, a race won by Emmet Mullins and owner Paul Byrne in 2020 with The Shunter.
Trainers Dan Skelton and Alan King, who have both landed the Greatwood Hurdle twice in the last six years, are represented by Playful Saint (Skelton), Nina The Terrier and Harbour Lake (both King).
Skelton and King also saddle the leading contenders for the Grade 2 Shloer Chase (1.45) in the shape on Nube Negra, an impressive winner of the 2m contest last year, and Edwardstone, who was twice successful at Grade 1 level over fences as a novice last season for King, including in the Arkle Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
