50-1, 100-1, 50-1: Dolphin leads home the march of the outsiders

The result of one of the biggest handicaps of the season, in which 50-1 winner Dolphin Vista led home fellow outsiders Sands Chorus (100-1) and Cote D'Azur (50-1) for a £90,344.98 tricast, may not have been welcomed by punters, but one man smiling was George Wood, the apprentice who captured the biggest success of his career.

Trained by Martyn Meade, who saddled the fourth-placed Chelsea Lad for good measure, Dolphin Vista looked to be at a disadvantage early on as the bulk of the action appeared to be developing on the far side away from where he was drawn in stall 29, but 3lb claimer Wood conjured a winning run from his mount to stun his rivals.

Based with Meade's Newmarket neighbour, James Fanshawe, Wood emerged as a capable rider with 38 winners in his first full campaign last year, but the success of Dolphin Vista means he is now on 42 for this season.

The 19-year-old, whose big-race celebrations would have had to wait until he took two rides at Chelmsford on Saturday evening, said: "It was good, but a little unexpected as he was a big price. Fair play to the team, who have done really well at home to get him back in good form.

"I wasn't 100 per cent sure I'd won, but I knew I had a good shout. I was a bit worried early on we were on the wrong side, but luckily he's a game horse who enjoyed coming through them."

Wood, who partnered Godolphin's Prize Money to victory in last year's November Handicap and also won the Listed Aphrodite Stakes on Newmarket's July course on the Luca Cumani-trained God Given this summer, was praised by Meade, who seeks his first top-level strike with Aclaim in Sunday's Prix de la Foret at Chantilly.

"So many things can go wrong, but fair dos, he came home the winner and it was a great ride by George," said the trainer.

"He stuck to his guns and where he was and got a clear run. He did everything we asked him to do and it's great for the team."

Meade himself deserves a slice of credit as well, since Dolphin Vista, who was fifth in the Lincoln for Richard Fahey, had run only once since joining him in May.

"It always is a surprise [to win] in a handicap with 34 runners – anything could happen – but the horse had been doing really well at home and we've taken lot of time with him," he added.

"He'd had quite a bit of racing before joining us and ran only once for us, so I thought to give him the time, wait for his ground and then of course you have to run in a contest like this, which is quite tricky."

Result provides record-breaking Exacta dividend

Unfathomable was the word for yesterday’s Cambridgeshire, much to the delight of the sponsors Betfred after the 50-1 win of Dolphin Vista beating 100-1 chance Sands Chorus.

The Tote owner could announce a record-breaking Exacta dividend of £18,290 which eclipsed the previous best of £6,245.40 when Oiseau Du Nuit (40-1) beat Askthemaster (50-1) in the 2011 Grand Annual at the Cheltenham Festival.

Unfortunately it was so difficult that nobody pocketed the sum. The half-unit win of 50p which paid £9,145 was split between more than one winner.

Unsurprisingly, with another 50-1 shot in third in Cote D’Azur, the
totetrifecta which rewards punters selecting the first three home was not won.
