Who are the greatest British heavyweight boxers of all time?

Britain's best heavyweight boxers

The WBA, WBC and WBO world heavyweight titles are on the line when Britain's Tyson Fury rematches Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia on December 21, and it’s a chance for the Gypsy King to bring all the belts back to the United Kingdom.

London’s Daniel Dubois is the current holder of the IBF strap, and with the likes of Anthony Joshua, Fabio Wardley and Joe Joyce waiting in the wings, we rank the best British heavyweight boxers of all time.

William Hill have a knockout betting offer. If you bet £10 on Fury vs Usyk, you'll get £60 in free bets.

Who wins? Do you rate the size and dogged determination of the Gypsy King or the speed and precision of Oleksandr Usyk? Whoever you back, you can get £60 in free bets with William Hill's boxing betting offer.

Lennox Lewis

Lennox Lewis is a three-time world heavyweight champion, a two-time lineal champion and a one-time undisputed king of the heavyweight division. The West Ham-born boxer won an Olympic gold medal in the amateur ranks and the Lion is widely regarded as one of the best heavyweights of all time.

Lewis defeated Vitali Klitschko, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Frank Bruno in a glittering career, and the physical power, stature and condition of the Londoner were matched with a fantastic jab and boxing brain.

Tyson Fury

Tyson Fury will be hoping to regain his throne as the heavyweight king, but whatever happens in the Gypsy King’s rematch with Oleksandr Usyk, the Morecambe man has to already be viewed as an all-time heavy-hitting great.

The 36-year-old has lost only one of his 36 professional bouts. Fury held unified titles from 2015 to 2016, and he has put in some spectacular performances in a long-standing career.

The Gypsy King showed miraculous powers of recovery to avoid defeat against Deontay Wilder, and that trio of bouts with the American, of which Fury won two, are some of the best heavyweight contests of the modern era.

Anthony Joshua

The wheels have come off for Anthony Joshua, following a pair of defeats to Oleksandr Usyk and a loss to current world champion Daniel Dubois, but AJ was once a fearsome big-hitting performer.

The Watford man held the unified world heavyweight championship twice between 2016 and 2021. He is a former British and Commonwealth champion, and while it may have come against limited opponents, few fighters have generated as much excitement and a following as AJ.

Joshua has time to get back to the peak of the sport, but his place in history is sealed even if his best is in the past.

David Haye

Perhaps David Haye’s peak came in the cruiserweight division, where the Bermondsey banger won three of the four major world titles, but the Haymaker captured the WBA world heavyweight title when beating Nikolai Valuev, and at his best, Haye was a furious fighter.

The Londoner was always in tremendous condition, and there were memorable wins over Enzo Maccarinelli, Jean-Marc Mormeck, Derek Chisora and Audley Harrison.

Henry Cooper

Always remembered for knocking the legendary Muhammad Ali to the canvas in 1963, Henry Cooper was undefeated in British and Commonwealth heavyweight championship contests for twelve years, and the Lambeth man had the European heavyweight title in his grasp for three years.

A cut stopped the Londoner from continuing after flooring Ali, and again injury prevented Cooper from fighting on in the 1966 rematch against the Greatest. However, the two-time BBC Sports Personality of the Year captured the hearts of the public and will be remembered as one of Britain's best.
