Cheltenham Festival day 4 preview

The fourth and final day of the Cheltenham Festival features the headline race of the entire meeting, the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup. The Gold Cup has been won by legendary names of the sport such as Golden Miller, Arkle, Dawn Run, Desert Orchid, Best Mate, Kauto Star and Denman.

Galopin Des Champs made it four wins in six years in the £625,000 event for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend when following up his 2023 success in the race last year. If Townend steers the Audrey Turley-owned nine-year-old to the hat-trick then he will surpass Pat Taaffe's four wins and become the outright winningmost rider in Gold Cup history.

Townend also won the County Handicap Hurdle on Absurde for Mullins, who saddled the JCB Triumph Hurdle hero Majborough. The Jukebox Man looked set to provide Ben Pauling and Harry Redknapp with their second festival success in less than 24 hours after Shakem Up'arry's Plate victory but he was pipped by Stellar Story in the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle.

Stellar Story's trainer Gordon Elliott also won the final race of the meeting, named after his former boss Martin Pipe, with Better Days Ahead. Limerick Lace led home a one-two for JP McManus in the Mrs Paddy Power Mares' Chase and any representative for that owner has to be respected given he has won the Grade 2 for the last three years.

The St. James’s Place Festival Hunters Chase, won by Fiona Needham's Sine Nomine last year, will have even more importance for amateur jockeys this season given it is one of two remaining races professionals are not permitted to ride in after the restriction was removed from the National Hunt Chase.

Cheltenham Festival 2025: day four tips

• Lulamba (Triumph Hurdle, 1.20 Friday):
  Lulamba can prove too good for his rivals in the Triumph Hurdle that opens Friday’s card. The Nicky Henderson-trained four-year-old looked seriously smart when making a winning debut for new connections at Ascot and appears the pick of the juvenile hurdlers.

• Valgrand (County Hurdle, 2.00 Friday):
  Dan Skelton has a top record in the County Hurdle and can saddle a fifth winner in the past decade with Valgrand. This lightly raced novice has course-winning form and a nice weight and will relish decent ground.

• Dinoblue (Mares’ Chase, 2.40 Friday):
  Dinoblue is a worthy favourite for the Mares’ Chase and can seal a four-timer in the race for owner JP McManus. The Willie Mullins-trained eight-year-old was narrowly denied in this event last year and can confirm recent Naas form with main rival Allegorie De Vassy.
