Strictly Come Dancing series 22 preview

Series 22 of Strictly Come Dancing is back on our screens on Saturday but the popular BBC contest will start under something of a cloud following a string of behind-the-scenes controversies involving several of the professional dancers.

Giovanni Penice and Graziano Di Prima have been given the boot following allegations from former dance partners of misconduct during the 2023 series, with further historical complaints suggesting there was a toxic atmosphere.

So this year’s dancers and even the judges can be expected to be on their best behaviour but there is a clear downgrade in the status of this year’s contestants as a result of the troubles.

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson and DIY SOS presenter Nick Knowles are two of the more familiar names stepping onto the dancefloor but neither are expected to go far, with Merson the 9-4 favourite to be the first eliminated and Knowles next best at 5-2.

The pair are 60-1 and 66-1 respectively to waltz off with the Glitterball Trophy in December, but better things are expected of JLS singer JB Gill and Love Island reject Tasha Gouri.

Saturday's opening show is just a meet and greet event, but contestants will start to strut their stuff before the first elimination in two weeks' time.
