Here's a list of Saturday's races at this year's Betfair Tingle Creek Festival.
Saturday, December 7
- 12.08pm - Claremont Novices Hurdle
- 12.40pm - Pride Mares Handicap Hurdle
- 1.15pm - Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle
- 1.50pm - Henry VIII Novices' Chase
- 2.25pm - Handicap Hurdle
- 3.00pm - Tingle Creek Chase
- 3.35pm - London National Handicap Chase
The big events keep coming in December for followers of thoroughbred racing, with another standout from the UK National Hunt season. The Tingle Creek Festival at Sandown boasts several high-profile fixtures across Friday and Saturday, including the main event, the Tingle Creek Chase, which promises to be a thrilling renewal of the Grade 1 contested over 1m 7f.
Which horse will win the Tingle Creek and join an exclusive list of champions? You'll find our thoughts on Saturday's headliner below.
2024 Tingle Creek: ones to watch
With a star-studded field expected at post for the 2024 renewal of the Tingle Creek, finding the winner won't be easy. You could make a strong case for any of the market leaders from the early betting, but it would come as no surprise to see another high-profile upset in a year that has already given us a fair share of drama and big-priced winners.
Betting traders nailed their colours to the mast early, picking Jonbon as their odds-on favourite, with the market leader attracting plenty of attention in the ante-post betting. Will Jonbon live up to expectations and deliver for Nicky Henderson and JP McManus? The eight-year-old gelding arrives at Sandown following wins in each of his previous three starts, including victory in the Grade 2 Cheltenham Chase last month on his first outing since April.
Jonbon has all the qualities of a Tingle Creek champion, as he showed 12 months ago when winning this race ahead of Edwardstone and Haddex Des Obeaux. Will he successfully defend his title? It's certainly possible, but many bettors will prefer to take a chance on a rival at a better price. Let's look at two of the main contenders.
Main dangers
Quilixios is a seven-year-old representing Henry de Bromhead, who won this race back in 2011 with Sizing Europe. Quilixios won at Naas in his season debut less than a month ago when taking the Grade 3 Barberstown Castle Chase over two miles, finishing well clear of odds-on favourite Marine Nationale. It was an impressive showing and Quilixios has more to offer.
Perhaps you prefer last year's runner-up to get his revenge and improve a place? The experienced Edwardstone was beaten by less than three lengths in 2023 and has been active since, running five times this year already, including when ending third at Cheltenham last month behind Jonbon and Boothill. Much better is needed from Edwardstone if he's to turn the tables on the champion, but he's shown many times in the past he has the quality to compete and the character needed to fight back.
