Royal Ascot day five preview

The final seven races bring a glorious week of action to a close, and it’s down to the older sprinters to put on a show in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Improvers Mill Stream, Shartash and Mitbaahy take on stalwarts of the division Kinross and Khaadem, who was the second big-priced winner in as many years when obliging at 80-1 last year.

St Leger winner Continuous, last seen finishing fifth in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in October, heads a star cast on his reappearance in the Hardwicke, with the improving Middle Earth in opposition.

The card kicks off with the final juvenile contest of the meeting, the Chesham Stakes, run over the same seven-furlong trip as the Group 3 Jersey Stakes that follows, while the Golden Gates and Wokingham provide the last devilishly difficult handicap puzzles to solve before the finale, the Queen Alexandra Stakes, which has been won by jumps or dual-purpose yards for the last four years.
