Betfair Chase, King George and more: potential runners and a long-range shout
Weights and entries were revealed on Tuesday for some of jumping's biggest prizes, including the Betfair Chase and Ladbrokes King George VI Chase.
Big-race entries: Cheltenham, Newbury and Kempton
Upcoming races: weights and entries
Paddy Power Gold Cup (Cheltenham, November 12)
Total entries: 36
The key horses:Coole Cody would be a popular winner but Evan Williams may have a more appealing contender in Coconut Splash. Irish winners of this are rare but Fan De Blues and French Dynamite appear to have plenty in their favour, while Ga Law ran a lovely race after a lengthy layoff in the Old Roan recently and this has been a long-term plan.
Current topweight: Mister Fisher (12st)
Ante-post favourite: Fan De Blues (7-1)
Unibet Greatwood Handicap Hurdle (Cheltenham, November 13)
Total entries: 40
The key horses:Emerging as a Champion Hurdle contender against the backdrop of Honeysuckle and Constitution Hill will not be easy this season, but Knappers Hill was a smart novice last term and that also applies to Might I. Alan King has won the Greatwood twice in recent campaigns and Call Of The Wild should have a shout, while last year's winner West Cork is a consistent sort capable of running well again.
Current topweights: Knappers Hill/First Street (12st)
Ante-post favourite: Dads Lad (5-1)
Betfair Chase (Haydock, November 19)
Total entries: 6
The key horses:Spectacular Cheltenham Gold Cup winner A Plus Tard will be all the rage and rightly so – he bolted up in this race last year as well. Bristol De Mai could bid for a fourth triumph, which would equal the legendary Kauto Star's Haydock haul and that would also be a well-received result. Expect Protektorat to be primed too.
Ante-post favourite: A Plus Tard (1-2)
Coral Gold Cup (Newbury, November 26)
Total entries: 56
The key horses:This test could suit Chantry House, who goes well fresh, while market leaders Corach Rambler and Dusart are respected. Improvement from Annsam after his first run of the autumn at Ascot recently is not ruled out and Gericault Roque has not won over fences, but might be interesting.
Current topweights: Bravemansgame/Protektorat (12st)
Ante-post favourites: Corach Rambler/Dusart (8-1)
Ladbrokes King George VI Chase (Kempton, December 26)
Total entries: 18
The key horses: A Christmas clash between Allaho and Bravemansgame would be one to savour, but L'Homme Presse and Galopin Des Champs would add glitz to the festive treat. Grand National hero Noble Yeats is another entry of note.
Ante-post favourite: Allaho (6-4)
Long-range shout: 'There is plenty to like at a double-figure price'
Ante-post odds: 20-1 generally
Nassalam enjoyed a productive novice chase campaign, scoring on three occasions, including a fortunate win in the Grade 2 Berkshire Chase at Newbury in November.
He made his seasonal reappearance in the Byrne Group Handicap Chase at Ascot over 2m1f last weekend and shaped as though he was in need of the run. Having hung left throughout, a return to left-handed track is an obvious move.
Going back up in distance will also help and his ground versatility is another positive. His current mark of 144 leaves him well treated on his Grade 1-placed hurdling form, and there is plenty to like at a double-figure price.
