High Definition on the drift as support comes for Ballydoyle outsiders
High Definition, out to give Aidan O'Brien a record-extending 15th success in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (3.45), is on the drift as punters seek some value in Saturday's Classic at the Curragh.
Available at 13-8 earlier this morning, High Definition has drifted out to a general 9-4 favourite, with money coming for both Hurricane Lane (5-1 from 6) and Lone Eagle (7-1 from 6-1).
Support has also been strong for two of High Definition's bigger-priced stablemates, with both Van Gogh (10-1 from 16) and Arturo Toscanini (28-1 from 40) shortening.
Van Gogh steps up to a mile and a half for the first time having struggled to to make his presence felt in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly when last seen.
Arturo Toscanini was sixth in the Queen's Vase on his most recent start but it would be dangerous to rule out any O'Brien-trained contender in a race he has dominated for two decades.
O'Brien also saddles 12-1 shot Wordsworth, who was second in the Queen's Vase, and 125-1 outsider Matchless.
Paddy Power spokesman Paul Binfield said: "High Definition has been strong at the top of the market over the last couple of days but we’ve seen some each-way support for his stable companions.
"Both Van Gogh, who was never dangerous in the French equivalent from stall 12 in a race dominated by horses from low berths, and at a bigger price Arturo Toscanini have been supported this morning."
The going at Newmarket is good to firm for a seven-race card headlined by the Group 3 Close Brothers Criterion Stakes (3.15), in which overnight favourite Kinross has been declared a non-runner.
The defection leaves Glorious Journey, trained by Charlie Appleby, at the head of the market at 7-2, with Motakhayyel and Royal Crusade next at a general 9-2.
In the day's other big race, the William Hill Northumberland Plate (3.30) at Newcastle, Trueshan has been supported into 7-2 (from 4-1) as he bids to carry 10st 4lb in the £150,000 handicap.
